Black jetbead (Rhodotypos scandens) is an invasive plant in the rose family that is highly toxic. Black jetbead is native to Asia and was introduced to the United States as an ornamental. It can be found in forests and along roadsides.
Black jetbead produces white flowers in the spring. In the fall, the plant produces black fruits that are in groups of four. The fruits can persist on the plant into winter. The plant has toothed leaves that grow in an opposite arrangement.
The fruit contains the toxin amygdalin which is a cyanogenic glycoside. Consuming the fruits could cause difficulty breathing, convulsions, respiratory failure, and possibly death.
